Once you’ve said “yes” to your significant other, it’s time to say “yes” to the dress! Wedding dress shopping can be both a truly enjoyable and a very stressful occasion, so today we are giving you some wedding dress shopping tips to help you survive the bridal boutiques, the shop assistants, and the friends and family you bring along with you.
Do make appointments
Most bridal boutiques will not accept walk-ins. They like to dedicate as much time as possible to you in the search for your dream dress, so planning out your day will make the shopping process much easier and stress-free. Don’t make more than three appointments in one day, as you may end up getting confused by all the different styles available.
Don’t limit your options
You will more than likely have an idea of what kind of dress you want before you hit the boutiques. Many bridal shops now have their current collection listed on their websites or on Facebook so you will have a good idea of what they have in stock. However, many brides make the mistake of limiting their shopping experience by saying they only want to try ballgowns, or only fit and flare dresses. Often, the dress we have pictured ourselves in for years turns out to be completely the wrong type. Trust the advice of the bridal assistants and be willing to try on something you would never have envisioned – you may surprise yourself.
Do have a budget in mind
Set your budget before you go shopping, and be honest with the bridal boutique assistants. That way you can avoid the possibility of falling in love with a dress that is way beyond your price range.
Don’t bring people who will get you down
Choosing the people who you want to bring along to your appointments is difficult. You will want honest opinions of course, but also tactful and helpful people. A jealous or negative sister or friend may sway your opinion on a dress you really love just because they envy you; likewise someone who is overly nice and eager to please may end up swaying you in the direction of a dress you’re not really sure about.
Do allow plenty of time to find your dress
Most bridal gowns will need to be ordered at least 8-9 months in advance, so take this into account when you are dress shopping. This is especially true if you are picky or indecisive – it may take much longer than 1 or 2 appointments to find your dream dress, which can eat into your timeframe. If you are planning a whirlwind wedding, you may be more limited in your choices, but could easily pick up a sample or sale dress that can be altered to fit. Allow time for alterations once your custom dress has arrived in case you have lost weight in between ordering and picking up your dress.
Do bring good underwear and heels to your appointments
Unless you are planning to buy a black or dark coloured dress, don’t wear black underwear! Nude, seamless underwear and a strapless bra are ideal for trying on gowns, as well as a pair of heels in a height that you would be comfortable in on your big day. The added height can completely change how the dress looks on you, and will improve your posture.
Finally, enjoy! Shopping for your wedding dress is such an exciting time, so by planning ahead you will have a truly enjoyable experience.
